Homelessness in Bishkek

George Hsia Photography - Homeless in Bishkek

Students from the Greenhouse Club have been serving the homeless of Bishkek periodically since 2002. Although we do not have an ongoing project right now, we do hope to organize SoS projects among the homeless soon. Here we have posted some information from the time we have spent on the streets. We hope this inspires you to think of ways you can take action to help.

Survival in the Manholes

George Hsia Photography - Homeless in Bishkek

Winters in Bishkek can be quite harsh, especially if you have no place to call home. Finding warmth is a matter of life and death which is why many of the homeless take refuge underground in the manholes.

In Bishkek there are few shelters. This "shelter" is just a room with mattresses teeming with disease.

Misconceptions

It is difficult emotionally to deal with the problem of homelessness. Most of us find them hard to look at and would rather not think about the homeless as humans with stories to tell. Many say that these people deserve to be on the streets because they made the choices that got them there.

In our time on the streets we've encountered our share of liars and addicts. But we've also found that when put in an environment where they are expected to succeed and not where they "deserve" to be these people do remarkably well.
